In this article two rhetorical strategies in Norwegian election campaign debates are analysed: credit claims and personal attacks. The rhetoric of politicians is confronted with the politicians’ fundamental views on strategic election campaign communication (conveyed in qualitative interviews), and with the evaluations journalists have of the politicians’ debate style. The aim is not to study what politicians say, but how they say things and how they ideally would like to say thing. In addition the article discusses the evaluations journalists give the debate style of the politicians. The analysis covers all the election campaign debates in connection with the Norwegian parliamentary election in 2001, all together 41 debates.
