Rhetorization and the Concept of People in 1900th Century Sweden

This article discusses the concept of rhetorization. Apart from identifying traditional uses of the term, the article also offers a new definition, where rhetorization is understood as governed by changes in the argumentative orientation of symbolic expressions. Changes in argumentative orientation are in turn being described as due to the following factors: the amount and frequency of rhetorical topoi governing the meaning of symbolic expressions, as well as the ambiguity of these expressions. By using these criteria, rhetorical criticism can measure degrees of rhetorization. The article applies the theory of rhetorization in a reading of how the concept of “people” changes in 19th century Sweden.
