Tillid er et underbelyst begreb i retorisk teori til trods for, at indbyrdes tillid faktisk er en forudsætning for retorik. I denne artikel ses på forholdet mellem tillid og retorisk handlekraft, og det fremføres, at retorisk handlekraft tilskrives i tillid til andre, selvet og samfundets institutioner. I tillidskriser er de retoriske udfordringer derfor også betydelige. Når tilliden svigter, beskytter vi os selv snarere end at komme hinanden i møde, og det påvirker de retoriske ytringers udformning, mening og kraft til at virke.
